Lantern

Chinese New Year is the time to get together as a family, settle old scores and wipe the slates clean. But this year, for the Chens, there’s one thing missing…

Set in modern day Auckland, two actors play ten characters in a play that ignites the burning question all New Zealanders confront; where do I belong?

Written by renowned Chinese-New Zealand playwright Renee Liang, Lantern performed a sold out, extra show added season in 2014 at the Musgrove studio as the first theatre production to be a part of the Auckland Lantern Festival programme.

Reviews

“...a tremendously powerful thing to be a part of; seeing people see themselves onstage, recognise their own lives and experiences, perhaps for the first time and hopefully not for the last time.”

- Sam Brooks, Lumiere Reader

“Auckland's ever-expanding Lantern Festival has burst out of its Albert Park site to encompass a contemporary piece of theatre that casts a flickering light on aspects of the Chinese experience that usually remain unseen.”

- Paul Simei-Barton, New Zealand Herald online

“They give outstanding performances as they morph from one role to another with superb timing and astute acting”

- John Daly-Peoples, National Business Review

PAT’s new production is an engaging, humorous drama centred around the Chens, a small, estranged Kiwi-Chinese family leading up to their traditional family New Year celebration meal. - Nik Smythe, Theatrescenes
