Alyssa Medel
In-House Producer
Alyssa Medel is a Filipino-New Zealander filmmaker, producer, and writer, who graduated from the University of Auckland with a BA in Screen Production and History. An emerging creative working in both screen and theatre, she is passionate about the relationship between visual storytelling and its power to centre voices that are normally marginalised. This has seen her leading cultural initiatives as a President (2017) and Vice-President for Arts and Culture (2018) for the Filipino Students’ Association, Project Manager for University of Auckland's Southeast Asian Cultural Week (2017, 2018), as well as being the founder of the University of Auckland’s Film Society in 2017.
Her recent theatre credits include, "PINAY" and "DEEP" as an Assistant Producer, and currently is the Co-Producer for Proudly Asian Theatre's Fresh off the Page and Fresh Developments. Her film credits include, short film, "Hexe", “Sally”, and “Lamat”. Recently, she has joined the Marketing team at Madman Entertainment NZ, and is developing her writing debut "Paraluman" through Proudly Asian Theatre. As a documentary filmmaker and journalist, she created the short documentary "Proudly Asian Theatre" while at university, and was an Assistant Producer for Eyes and Ears' social justice short film, "This is Us", she has also written articles for The Big Q and Newsroom covering issues on activism, racism, and indigenous rights. She is now exploring interdisciplinary theatre, and multiplatform storytelling through her independent creative work.
